National Chamber Music Festival for Schools
Pro Corda's annual Chamber Music Festival for Schools is a celebration of all that is great about ensemble playing: its central role in the development of young musicians, the wonderful chamber music repertoire, the endless possibilities for creative ensemble work and crucially the thousands of young people themselves up and down the country who get such a huge amount out of engaging with ensemble playing. Formerly the National Chamber Music Competition, Pro Corda was asked to take over this annual Festival in 2006, and since then it has grown in size and scope. Celebrating all chamber groups from the conventional to the extroadinary (string quartets rub shoulders with tuba octets!) the National Chamber Music Festival for Schools visits schools in all Arts Council England regions, together with venues in Scotland and Wales. Young ensembles play to top ensembles and performers and each receive a mini masterclass. Regional qualifying and semi final rounds produce groups to play in a non competitive finals day (which will take place at the Birmingham Conservatoire for the 2010 Festival.) Highly competitive groups get the opportunity to perform at prestigious venues throughout the UK.
For Pro Corda, the CMF is a crucial tool to enable us to tap into an ever wider range of young people and talent and a central aim of the CMF is to introduce and develop chamber music and ensemble training within the state sector.
