Pro Corda's annual Chamber Music Festival for Schools is a celebration of all that is great about ensemble playing: its central role in the development of young musicians, the wonderful chamber music repertoire, the endless possibilities for creative ensemble work and crucially the thousands of young people themselves up and down the country who get such a huge amount out of engaging with ensemble playing.

MUSICAL ENCOUNTERS

13th - 17th December 2010


Musical Encounters at Pro Corda, the International Chamber Music Academy, provides advanced coaching in a truly beautiful and inspirational setting for read-formed chamber ensembles (string and piano based) of undergraduate and postgraduate level. The name of the course encapsulates its ethos: encounters with some of the world's most experienced coaches and chamber musicians.

We are delighted to welcome the world famous Wihan Quartet for December's course. All ensembles will receive daily coaching sessions from members of the quartet. There will also be open masterclass sessions, public performances, and an opportunity to gain education workshop experience for those ensembles who wish to build this into their work.

This tailor made programme is ideal for the young modern day ensemble at the point of entering the music business, alongside recently formed and developing groups.

Participating ensembles in previous Musical Encounters courses have included: The Azzura Quartet, The Doric Quartet, The Sacconi Quartet and The Solstice Quartet.

The Wihan Quartet was formed in 1985 and in 2010 will celebrate its 25th Anniversary, and still with its four original members! The Quartet's outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage and of the many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire is widely acknowledged. They have developed an impressive international career, which includes visits to major festivals in Europe and the Far East. They visit the United States and Japan regularly and are frequent visitors to the UK.

The Quartet's discography of over 25 CDs has attracted many excellent reviews including from Musicweb for their recent release of Smetana Quartets "The music making on this disc has a feeling of 'rightness' that makes comparisons largely superfluous."
